The Waverly Free Library’s Summer Reading Program kicks off the week of July 12, with this year’s theme of On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! In addition to weekly special events at the library, there will also be a series of community programs that – with one exception – will be open to the public.
The first public event will be a performance by magician David Black on Wednesday, July 13, starting at 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Waverly Village Hall on Ithaca Street.
This will also serve as the official kickoff event. Signup sheets will be available and registrations will be accepted.
One special event for library card holders only will be the Portable Planetarium from the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center in Vestal. This will take place on Friday, July 22, starting at 2 p.m. and will be set up in the Community Room at the Waverly Village Hall. Students will use the planetarium based on their ages. Please note again that this program will be available only for library card holders.
Returning to Waverly on Tuesday, July 26, will be the Bubble Games!, featuring Doug Rougeax of Bubblemania, who will perform in the Community Room at the Waverly Village Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.
Local author Maureen Wright will be reading her books and leading activities at the library on Wednesday, July 27, at 10:15 a.m. for a special Story Hour.
The library will host the Game Truck on Wednesday, Aug. 3, starting at 5 p.m. for students with library cards and at 6 p.m. for all others. This tricked-out RV features several video screens and game consoles, which will be playing video games that work with the Summer Reading theme.
Weekly community events will conclude with the return of Dan the Snake Man, who will put on his show at Muldoon Park on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 6:30 p.m.
The performances will coincide with the Library’s Summer Reading Program, which starts the week of July 11-16 and runs through the week of Aug. 8-13. Participants of all ages will set a goal of reading a certain amount each week, and at the end will receive a prize. Signup sheets are currently available at the Library or online at waverlyfreelibrary.org.
Kids participating in the program can bring their reading logs in to the library at any time to receive a prize and a ticket for the grand prize drawing of a Kindle Fire. There will be special workshops on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m., featuring Make Your Own Bookmark (July 19), Pokemon Go! (July 26), Potter Party (Aug. 2), Olympic Fever (Aug. 9) and the Prize Party on Aug. 16.
As part of the Summer program, Adult Coloring Nights will begin on July 26 and will be held each Tuesday at 6 p.m. And there will be a Gaming session on July 20 at 2 p.m.
The Library’s Summer Reading Program is funded in part by a grant from the BOOKS program and a donation by the Valley Kiwanis Club.
